Rubber Support Pads

Fixed height paver support pads

When building elevated decks over sloping surfaces including rooftop decks with porcelain or concrete pavers, fixed height rubber support pads are normally the best support to use at elevations below approx. 1″. These pads have inbuilt pacer tabs for quick and easy installation and are simply placed under the pavers at each corner.  The upright tabs also ensure all pavers are accurately spaced and aligned.

We normally suggest using rubber pads rather than plastic pads at low elevations (despite the slightly higher cost), since they offer:

  • superior sound absorption
  • added shock protection
  • greater friction between pavers and the substrate

Plus, because the greater friction inhibits movement of the pavers, you can often avoid the trouble and expense of constructing a perimeter barrier around the paved area.

When laying pavers using rubber pads, you can start with the lowest height 1/4″ high pads (giving a finished deck height of just 1″ with a 3/4″ thick porcelain pavers), then stack additional pads on top of each other up to a maximum height of about 1 1/2″ as you move across a sloping surface. Rubber shims 1/16″ or 1/8″ thick can be added for minor height adjustments and ensure the pavers do not rock on the surface.

Once you reach a height of approx. 1 1/2″, you’ll need to switch to adjustable height pedestals if you need additional height, using either the SE range or the lower cost NM ‘Maxi” range of Eterno pedestals.
